Pilot
Startup bookkeeping and CFO services combining software with human accountants
About Pilot
Pilot handles bookkeeping, tax and CFO services for startups and small businesses, explicitly as a hybrid: roughly half people and half software. Its AI Accountant provides real-time expense tracking, cash-flow scenario modelling and automated reporting, while a US-based advisory team of CFOs and operators handles judgment. Backed by Bezos Expeditions at a $1.2B valuation with 3,500+ customers. Sistava provides a finance employee inside a broader workforce, which is a genuinely different proposition from an outsourced accounting firm.

What Pilot is and is not
Pilot is an accounting firm with unusually good software, not an autonomous bookkeeper. It says so directly: the model is roughly 50/50 people and software, with a US-based advisory team including seasoned CFOs and operators handling the judgment calls. That framing is deliberate and, frankly, honest. Bookkeeping has edge cases where being confidently wrong is expensive, and Pilot positions humans as the answer to those rather than claiming the AI has them covered. Its AI Accountant handles the parts that suit automation: real-time expense tracking, cash-flow scenario modelling for hiring decisions, and keeping books continuously ready rather than reconstructing them at year end.
Why finance is the hardest category to automate
Because the cost of a mistake is asymmetric. A marketing agent writing a mediocre post wastes an hour. A bookkeeping agent miscategorising a year of transactions creates a tax problem, an audit risk and a very expensive cleanup. That is why this category still sells humans in the loop while others race toward full autonomy, and why Pilot leads with its advisory team rather than its automation. It is also why a workforce platform should be honest about scope. A Sistava finance employee handles reconciliation prep, reporting, chasing invoices and keeping records current. It does not replace a qualified accountant signing off on your filings, and we would not pretend otherwise.
Pilot or a finance employee?
If you are a funded startup with investors who expect clean books, tax handled and a CFO to call before a board meeting, buy Pilot. The alternative is doing it yourself badly, and that is a false economy. If you are a small business whose finance pain is invoices not being chased, receipts not being filed, reports not existing and nobody noticing the subscription that renewed at triple the price, that is operational work rather than accounting work, and an employee handles it. A lot of companies eventually want both: an employee doing the continuous operational finance work, and an accountant reviewing and filing. Those two are complements, not substitutes.
