How to Connect Google Drive to Claude, Step by Step

How-to — — by Mahmoud Zalt

Connect Google Drive to Claude in a few clicks. What it can read, how Sheets arrive, whether files stay in sync, and how shared drive permissions behave.

The setup takes about a minute. What takes longer is understanding what actually happens after you approve it, because the answer is not "Claude can now see my Drive" in the way most people picture it.

Your Drive is probably a mix of Google Docs, spreadsheets with real formulas, scanned PDFs, screenshots dropped into folders, and a shared drive that someone else administers. Each of those lands differently, and the differences are exactly what generic tutorials skip.

How do you connect Google Drive to Claude?

Go to Settings, then Connectors, then Google Drive, and connect with your Google account, approving the permissions on Google's own screen. Then in any conversation, click the plus button and choose Add from Google Drive to search your recent files, or paste the document URL straight into the chat.

Connecting Google Drive

  1. Check whose account you are on — A personal Google account approves the connection itself. On a managed Google Workspace account, your administrator can restrict which third party apps are allowed, so if the consent screen refuses you, that is who to ask.
  2. Open Settings, then Connectors — Find Google Drive in the connector list and start the connection. You are handed to Google to sign in.
  3. Read the consent screen before you approve — Google spells out what the connection may do. This is the only place the scope is stated plainly, so read it rather than clicking through. You can review or revoke it later from your Google Account security settings.
  4. Add a file in the conversation — Click the plus button in chat and choose Add from Google Drive. Search your recently accessed documents, or paste the file's URL if you already have it open in another tab.
  5. Ask it to search instead of hunting — Once connected you can ask Claude to search across your Drive for the file you half remember, rather than finding it yourself first.

Anthropic's connector page also lists write actions: Claude can share, move and trash files, and it asks for your approval by default before it changes anything. The same page notes it does not support adding comments, converting xlsx files to Sheets, or converting pptx files to Slides.

Which file types actually get read?

Anthropic's documentation lists reading Sheets, Slides, PDFs, images and Microsoft Office files, alongside Google Docs. The important caveat is stated plainly on the same page: Claude extracts text content only from Google Drive files, and images embedded inside documents are not processed.

That single sentence explains most of the surprises. A slide deck where the numbers live inside a screenshot reads as almost empty. A scanned contract saved as an image inside a PDF gives you far less than you expected. The text has to be text.

What you have in DriveHow it arrivesWhat to watch
Google DocRead directly, and it keeps syncing with the latest version in DriveComments and suggestions are a separate layer, do not assume they come along
Google SheetExported as CSVCSV is values only, so formatting, colours and charts do not survive the trip
Google SlidesExported as plain textAnything living inside an image on the slide is not extracted
PDFText extractedA scanned PDF is a picture of text, so expect much less than a born-digital one
Office files, docx and xlsxRead as Microsoft Office filesThe connector does not convert xlsx to Sheets or pptx to Slides

Does Claude see live data or a snapshot?

For a Google Doc added to a conversation, Anthropic's support documentation says it continues to sync with the most up to date version in Google Drive. So it is closer to live than to a snapshot. A Sheet exported as CSV, though, is a copy of the values at the moment it was pulled.

The practical rule: treat anything numeric as a reading taken at a point in time, and say when it was taken. If you paste an answer from a sheet into a report, note the date, because the sheet moved on.

How do shared drive permissions behave?

Anthropic states that Claude mirrors your existing permissions and cannot reach anything you could not already open in Google Workspace. So the question is never "can Claude see this file", it is "can my Google account see this file", and that is answered entirely on Google's side.

Google's shared drives use membership roles rather than per-file sharing. Manager can manage the drive and its members, Content manager can upload, edit, move and delete files, Contributor can edit and upload but cannot move or delete, Commenter can only comment, and Viewer can only view. If you are not a member of that shared drive, the files inside it are simply not there for you.

Two consequences worth planning around. First, a teammate who can see a folder does not mean you can, so an answer that works on their account can fail on yours. Second, if your connector has write access and you hold Content manager on a shared drive, moving or trashing a file affects everyone, not just your own view.

This is why we treat the connection as belonging to a named worker rather than to a chat window. At Sistava, the Google access sits on the AI Employee you hire, so you can see which one holds it, what it is allowed to touch, and what it did with it.

What this connection will not do

The connector is good at fetching and reading. It is not a research assistant that has quietly read your whole Drive and is waiting with an opinion. Here is what still catches people out.

That last one is the difference between a connector and a colleague. A connector answers when asked. Work that has to happen every week, like reading the new files in a client folder and writing the summary, needs something that starts by itself, which is what hiring an AI Employee is for.

FAQ

Do I need a paid Claude plan to connect Google Drive?

Anthropic's support documentation says Google Workspace connectors are available for all users on Claude and Claude Desktop. Availability of individual connectors does change, so check the connector page for your account rather than trusting a blog post, including this one.

Can Claude edit or delete my Google Drive files?

Anthropic's connector page lists share, move and trash actions, and says Claude asks for your approval by default before making changes. It also says the connector does not support adding comments, converting xlsx to Sheets, or converting pptx to Slides.

Why can it not read my spreadsheet properly?

Because Sheets are handed over as CSV, which is a flat grid of values with no formulas, formatting or charts. If your meaning lives in a chart or in conditional formatting, none of that arrives. Copy the numbers that matter into a clean tab and point at that instead.

Does it work with shared drives?

It works with whatever your own Google account can already open, because Claude mirrors your existing Workspace permissions. Shared drives use membership roles, so if you are not a member of that shared drive, its files are invisible to you and therefore to the connector.

Does the file stay in sync after I add it?

For a Google Doc, Anthropic's documentation says it continues to sync with the most up to date version in Google Drive. Treat spreadsheet exports differently, since a CSV export is the values as they were when it was pulled.

How do I disconnect it?

Remove the connector in Claude's settings, and separately review third party access in your Google Account security settings. Doing both is the habit worth keeping, because revoking on Google's side is what actually ends the access.
