How to Test an AI Employee on Customer Questions Before Hiring

How-to — — by Mahmoud Zalt

Evaluate an AI Employee on real customer questions, source accuracy, escalation and the work left for your team.

A demo can show that an AI tool answers questions. Before hiring an AI Employee for customer work, test whether it can use your information and hand off the cases it cannot resolve.

Select a representative question set

Choose questions from real support conversations after removing unnecessary personal information. Include routine questions, requests that depend on the customer account, ambiguous questions and a request to speak to a person. Keep the correct answer or expected next step beside each case.

A small retailer might include a delivery question, a request to change an address and a complaint about a damaged order. These are different jobs: an answer from a policy page is not proof that a tool can safely change an order.

Supply approved information

Give the employee the current policy and identify its owner and update date. Ask it to point to the information behind each answer. A product that can write a fluent response but cannot access your current policy may create work rather than remove it.

Define what to do when the source is missing or contradictory. The right outcome can be an honest request for clarification or a handoff. Do not assume the employee can see an order, issue a refund or access a customer record unless the specific connection supports that action.

Test the handoff

A useful handoff tells the person taking over what the customer asked, what has already been checked, what remains unresolved and how urgent the matter is. Test what happens if no person is available and make sure the customer is not told an issue is resolved when it is only queued.

Review each answer for correctness, tone and unauthorized promises. Measure how much work remains for your team, not just how many questions received a response. Ask who updates the knowledge source when an incorrect answer reveals an outdated policy.

Decide on a first assignment

Start with a narrow set of questions and a named business owner. Keep a person responsible for exceptions and customer commitments. Expand only after the employee is useful on ordinary cases and handles uncertainty appropriately.

Sistava offers AI Employees for business roles with shared context and connected tools. Give a role your approved materials and test the actions available in your setup before relying on it for customer work.

Score the results consistently

For each test, record whether the answer was factually correct, whether it used the approved source and whether the right next action was taken. Include a separate mark for unsupported promises. A response that sounds helpful but invents a refund policy should fail the test.

Ask the same questions after updating the source. Keep the previous result so the owner can see whether a correction improved the answer without breaking another case.
